Day of Joy in Uganda

We had another amazing day in Kawete! Once again, we played together and shared many laughs and smiles. The young people helped to paint the chalkboards for the school and we continued meeting with the sponsored children.

Dr. Kent and Dr. Craig also had an exciting day in the clinic. A mother from the village came in with her baby who had hydrocephaly (spinal fluid build up around the brain). This condition was putting extreme pressure on the baby's brain and eyes. Dr. Kent felt he had to tap the baby's head and see if some of the fluid could drain. Future medical professionals, Wyatt Conner, Clare Killian, and Alexandra Stoppel, got to watch the procedure. Although the mother was very scared and this procedure was pretty risky in this environment, it was necessary and Dr. Kent was able to drain 2 oz. of fluid from the baby's brain!! It relieved a lot of the pressure and pain from the baby and she was finally able to look up at her mother! Despite the instant relief, the baby will eventually need to have a VP shunt placed in and hopefully we will be able to help the mother get this done in a nearby hospital. We were all so proud of the doctors and their bravery to help save the baby and bring hope to the mother.
